the Mad Dogs & Englishmen theatre company returns to the Roman Town House following its spell-binding production of Othello in 2009.
This year they present a new production, ‘The Magician’s Box’ by Ann Courtney, which celebrates the life of visionary Victorian agriculturist, John Joseph Mechi. Described as “a Victorian kaleidoscope [that] takes you on an incredible journey fed by one man’s vision and imagination”, the performance begins at 7.30pm, with the grounds open from 6.30pm for picnics.

Local musical duo y’Strel’s Band begin their new show ‘The Little Red Book Tour: Songs from the New National Song Book (1905)’ at the Roman Town House. The tour aims to re-connect audiences with songs they probably haven't heard since childhood. The New National Song Book was commissioned by the Board of Education in 1905 and widely used for decades. It includes songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, many of which come from the late 18th century. The performance begins at 7.30pm, with the grounds open from 6.30pm for picnics. Following the success of the annual Beer Festival, Stevens Farm is proud to present the inaugural Stevens Farm Cider and Music Festival in aid of Julia’s House, taking place on Saturday 11th September 2010 from 12.00pm.
Saturdays musical programme is set to go down a storm with local band Rebels From The Waist Down kicking off the proceedings playing rock and indie covers, Chris Ricketts & Mark Willshire bringing folk and traditional music into the 21st century, then rock/pop/folk writer and musician Jonathan Cotton, punchy folk/pop trio Wob followed by headliners Stress set to rock the stage playing both classics and chart hits.
Julia’s House will keep the kids entertained from 12.00 – 16.00 with a range of fun family activities including face painting, animal petting and mini-golf that will be occurring throughout the afternoon, plus the shop will be putting on an evening hog roast for those that get a little peckish.
Festival-goers will have the chance to soak up all the entertainment on offer with a great selection of ciders and perry including Em’s ‘Rumpy Pumpy Scrumpy (the agricultural aphrodisiac)’, Dorset Piddle Brewery’s Gypsy’s Kiss, Mr Whitehead’s Strawberry Cider, Orchard Pig Cider, the award-winning ‘Cider By Rosie and many more!
