Major Watersports Event Coming to Weymouth
2:54pm 27th June 2013
Last year we saw Olympians take to Weymouth and Portland's waters, but this summer you could be competing on them in the UK's first ever Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) race.
It's all part of the Ecover Blue Mile, a weekend in July where you can try paddleboarding and kayaking for free, and it's part of the Olympic legacy initiative "Join In".
For the first time the event's taking place off Weymouth's beaches, and the races are open to everyone, the only requirement is that you're over 14 years of age.
All equipment is provided.
Organiser Conrad Humpreys, who is also a triple round-the-world racing yachtsman from Devon, spoke to Wessex FM about the event. He encouraged everyone to get involved, "Stand-up Paddleboarding and kayaking are really accessible and you can come down, join in, you can sign up for the races. You know, we provide all of the equipment, all of the know-how and safety. So really you just turn up on the day and have a good time, or pre-register for the whole weekend."
The weekend is the 27th-18th of July.
