130 Cygnets Vaccinated At Abbotsbury Swannery
4:31pm 9th July 2013
Swanherds have the mammoth job of injecting 130 cygnets plus their parents today at Abbotsbury Swannery.
The routine vaccine will protect them against a fatal bird virus.
Swanherd Dave Wheeler said: 'Swans are very susceptible to duck viral enteritis. In the past we have lost a lot of birds very quickly to this virus.
'We go round nests and pens one at a time and sometimes this means catching the birds in the water. This can be a very difficult procedure and can result in hilarious viewing for spectators observing swanherds getting a ducking, or sinking up to their knees in mud.'
