"Lights Out" Energy Saving Scheme for Bridport
8:13am 10th July 2013
Get ready for the lights to go off earlier in Bridport.
The council will be switching street lights off in the town and also in Bothemhampton, Bradpole and West Bay at around 1am in the morning. (midnight during the autumn/winter months). The changes will begin in late July.
It's part of a drive to reduce energy costs.
We're being promised they'll only be switched off in places where there are no major concerns over road safety and crime.
Part-night lighting has been rolled out across Dorset since 2011. It is now operating on residential streets in Dorchester, Weymouth, Portland, Christchurch, Blandford, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Corfe Mullen, Ferndown, West Moors, Swanage, Wareham, Upton Town and Verwood. While many residents supported the scheme, some feared crime would rise -but there is no evidence this has happened.
Dorset Police investigated claims in Dorchester that anti-social behaviour had risen following the switch-off and found that there had been no increase in the areas where the lights had been turned off. In fact, the proportion of anti-social behaviour incidents reported during the hours of darkness reduced from 36 per cent in 2010 to 31 per cent in 2011.
