New Centre Opens At Weymouth College

A new specialist education centre for students with learning difficulties or disabilities has opened at Weymouth College.
The new centre will boast dedicated facilities including a garden centre and horticulture training area, retail shops, a large, modern classroom, a large toilet, shower and hoist accessible for wheelchair users, computer stations, sensory garden designed and planted by students, sensory/quiet room with calming light and sound effects for time out and a 'pets corner'.
Independent living facilities will include four kitchen stations with a washing machine, a tumble dryer, a dishwasher, fridge and also a bedroom area to learn general housekeeping.
The new provision will host five specific courses: Futures, Independent Living Awards, Life Skills, Horticulture Introduction with Retail Skills and New Directions. These will all focus on confidence boosting and developing independent living or work skills.
Students will be involved in visits to various services and facilities in the local area, as well as have the opportunity to take part in voluntary community projects. They will learn basic computer skills, maths and English to complement their learning in a fully supported environment.
