Plans have been announced to transform Portland Port into a major ship repair facility, creating up to thousand jobs!
The Harbour Authority officially announced they were looking for an international partner to build the repair yard this lunchtime.
The 50 million pound project is part of a long-term plan to develop Portland into one of the most economically active ports on the south coast.
Ships could be sailing-in for repair work by 2015.
The Harbour has now launched its international search to find a partner to build the repair yard on Portland.
Chief Executive of the Harbour Steve Davis says 300 people will be employed directly by the Port but hundreds of other jobs will be available: "The ship yard will concentrate on ship repairs and the technical aspects of that work. There will be an opportunity for local companies to be employed as sub-contractors to the main ship company."
"Generally the jobs will be for marine specialists, electrical companies, air conditioning companies and security companies and general engineering really. It'll be a massive boost to the local economy if we succeed."
