Alcohol Awareness Courses For Offenders

7:08am 2nd August 2013

Special courses rather than fixed penalty notices could be handed out for some alcohol related offences in Dorset.

The 'Alcohol Diversion Scheme' means offenders issued with a fixed penalty notice for disorder (PND) have the opportunity of applying for the course.

If accepted and completed, the original PND will be cancelled.

It's to work on a similar principal to 'drivers awareness courses' for some motorists convicted of speeding offences, who may be given the option of the course rather a fixed penalty and points on the licence.

The courses last half a day, and cover a number of subjects relating to alcohol including health management, consequences and ways forward to address their problems, but are only open to those not already known to police.

The cost to the offender is £ 40.
