Hoax Calls Putting Lives at Risk

Portland's Coastguard is warning lives are being put at risk, after a number of hoax call outs.

A mystery person has been phoning-in fake emergencies across West Dorset.

Portland's launch site say the hoax calls began a couple of weeks ago and some days they've been getting 2 or 3 a day.

On a number of occasions when the chopper launched to an emergency, they found nothing.

It's a major cause for concern if the fake calls keep coming-in, with the Coastguard Agency saying people could die if Portland's chopper can't attend a real emergency.

A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said:

"Search resources are always deployed just in case it is a genuine emergency. Hoax calls are dangerous and can put lives at risk, as rescue units dealing with these malicious calls may not be available for other incidents."

Dorset Police is investigating.
