Portland Sea Cadets Claim Record Prize Haul

12 young Portlanders have helped the South West Sea Cadet Band march to success.
A national contest was held in the grounds of the Tower of London at the weekend.
The band was made up of young people from across the south who had to rehearse via You Tube and Skype.
The South West Area Band achieved the unbelievable, scooping 9 prizes! No other Sea Cadet Band has ever won that many trophies in the National Band Contest before. Prizes won included;
" Best Solo Bugler - Able Cadet, Tom Cox - TS Penn, Portland
" Second Place Solo Drum - Able Cadet, Thomas Louch - TS Penn, Portland
" Third Place Solo Drum - Able Cadet, Tom Cox - TS Penn, Portland
" Best Bugle Section
" Best Corps of drums
" Best Musical Display
" Best Drum Major
" Best Original Composition
" And the coveted, 'Best All Round Band'
Medals and Trophies were awarded by High Ranking RN Naval Personnel, the Band have also been awarded the honour of performing in the Royal Naval Association Parade through Whitehall, London in September. Musical Director SC CPO Damien Hawkins stated, "I am exceptionally proud of all of our cadets and how hard they have worked through all aspects of this contest. For so many to have participated from TS Penn is something the whole Island should take pride in."
Portland Sea Cadet Band meets at TS Penn, next to the Kimberlin Club, Westcliff, Portland, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm. It is open to anyone aged 10yrs to 18yrs from beginners to more experienced musicians.
