Dorset Prepares as Badger Cull Pilot Begins
8:12am 27th August 2013
Dorset remains on standby for a trial badger cull AFTER the first pilot scheme started in West Somerset overnight.
The culls are being trialled to tackle Bovine TB in cattle and will run over a six-week period as well as in west Gloucestershire.
Dorset is on backup duties and could be next in line to trial a cull.
Hundreds of campaigners are camping out in West Somerset and the Police Force are on standby to tackle any trouble.
Director of conservation at the Dorset Wildlife Trust Imogen Davenport told Wessex FM there are other ways to deal with Bovine TB.
“In the short term there are more effective and less damaging ways solutions, including vaccination for Badgers which we are trialling now. This is something that Dorset Wildlife Trust is looking into and we’re hoping to launch a small vaccination programme this autumn.”
