Dorchester Swimmers In Mass Channel Relay
7:50am 6th September 2013
Swimmers at a Dorchester leisure centre will be trying to cross the English Channel several times today (Friday 6th September) without leaving our county.
Staff at 1610 Dorchester Sports Centre are taking part in a Mass Channel Relay to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Twenty members of staff will be involved, it starts at 9am and they'll be doing 21 mile swimming, rowing, and running relays.
It's the 1610 chosen Charity of the Year so this is all part of a twelve-month series of fundraising events.
Organiser Laura Taylor spoke to Wessex FM about the fundraising, "Many families in Dorset have been supported by this wonderful charity so the staff at the centre wanted to do their bit to fundraise for such a worthwhile cause. It is quite a challenge we have set our selves and we thought we could take on 21 miles for each sporting challenge, the distance it takes to cross the Channel. We hope local people will support us with sponsership as well as cheering us on throughout the day."
