Dorset Smells Success After The World Garlic Eating Competition
12:30pm 17th September 2013
Our County can now boast a World Garlic Eating Champion!
The first ever World Garlic Eating Competition took place at The George Inn in Chideock on Saturday the 14th September.
Twenty-five people took part in the competition which involved eating as many raw, pre-peeled cloves of garlic in five minutes as they could.
At 5pm the competition officially started in five minute heats where three to four people faced each other. The garlic was placed in pots of ten and a close eye was kept on how many everyone had consumed! The garlic cloves had to be chewed a couple of times before they were swallowed, and all taking part were given a free pint of Chideock cider to drink during the actual eating.
All competitiors had to pay an entrance fee and the money raised will be split between The Weldmar Hospice and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
The winner was Oliver Farmer from Charmouth who took part in the final heat and managed to consume an impressive fourty nine raw cloves of garlic! He was presented with a cup and £100 for his efforts. Alistair Harvey from Bridport came a close second after eating 46, and third was David Greenman from Lyme Regis with 45.
Pauline Bridsall from Old Windsor claimed the women's title with an impressive 33 raw cloves.
Wessex FM were there and we asked Oliver how it felt to be a World Champion, "I'm very proud... I might even have to get a tatoo with it."
He continued to say the actual eating of the raw garlic wasn't a pleasant experience, "it was pretty horrendous, the garlic just keeps on getting stronger even after you've stopped eating it."
The whole competition was thought up by Mark from South West Garlic Farm who supplied all the garlic on the evening. He explained he thought "mad, wacky competitions are what Dorset's all about", and added that he wasn't allowed to take part because through handling garlic everyday he can no longer taste it, in his words it has seeped into his skin. He said the World Garlic Eating Competition will now be an annual event.
