Take Your Place In History

8:51am 27th September 2013

A project to record our memories of how we've spent our leisure time over the last 60 years is looking for more contributors.

Volunteers in Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland and Bridport have been interviewing people from all walks of life and of all ages.

The project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund will create an important archive which will be housed at the Dorset History Centre.

Joe Stevens, project leader, said; "Often people are bemused when I ask if I can interview them. They have no sense of how their stories can add to our understanding of a particular place and time. That their stories would be of any interest to anyone. This is a common assumption by working people, that their stories of life and work are of little or no importance. The consequence of this assumption for our archives, is that too few of us keep any records; any photos, press cuttings, memorabilia; of our lives, our work and our struggles."

If you are interested in your story being added to this archive, or you would like to find out more about this project, please get in touch with Joe Stevens on 07784 874112, email joe@freetimeourstories.org.uk. or visit freetimeourstories.org.uk.
