New Arrivals At Monkey World
8:05am 4th October 2013
There'll be even more monkeying around at a local ape rescue centre after the birth of two baby chimpanzees!
Monkey World in Wareham welcomed the new twins on Wednesday the 25th of September to mother Cherry.
The two girls have been named Thelma and Louise by the delighted Director of the centre, Dr. Alison Cronin. She explained her reasoning, "These babies were contraception outlaws, and it was two little girls; they've bucked the trend, they've fought the birth control, they've come into this world, so I thought it was only fitting we named them Thelma and Louise."
Cherry had been on birth control pills as the centre doesn't breed chimps. However, last year she was on antibiotics for a chest infection and it's thought this stopped her contraceptives from working.
Dr Alison Cronin told us the staff hadn't even realised Cherry had twins initially because they couldn't get very close. She said all the chimps were delighted too and that they were cherished and loved by the whole group, "they're loving the new arrivals just as much as we are."
