Plans for Temporary Travellers Site Near Dorchester
2:28pm 7th November 2013
Councillors have earmarked an area just outside the village of Piddlehinton for travellers who illegally set-up camp in Dorset.
The County Council wants to create a temporary site for gypsies there to stop them disturbing local communities.
A group of traveller’s set-up camp on playing fields at the Thomas Hardye School this summer. It's after they were moved-on by the authorities from a green area in Poundbury. Their presence prompted loads of complaints to the council and Dorset Police eventually moved them on.
Portfolio Holder for Environment is Councillor Hilary Cox said creating a temporary site will allow them to move travelling families away quicker:
"If we have a site available in this part of the county, they can't stay because the Police can use their powers to move them on. If a site is available and they choose not to use it they will be escorted out the county."
The temporary traveller site at Piddlehinton could be up and running by next summer is planning permission is given the go ahead.
