New Village Hall for Moreton
8:13am 20th November 2013
Residents in the village of Moreton are finally getting a new village hall.
Its thanks to a £291,396 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, funding of £145,000 from Viridor Credits Environmental Company through the Landfill Communities Fund, and a grant of £50,000 from Purbeck District Council.
The village's existing hall is nearly 100 years old and has sadly reached the stage where it is beyond economic repair. It was given to the village by the local army camp back in 1920, so was second hand even then!
Catherine Chandler, Chairman of the Moreton Village Hall Management Committee said: "The whole village was consulted when it became clear that the old hall would require huge expenditure just to bring it up to minimum standards. Residents overwhelmingly voted to retain a community facility in the village by raising money to build a new hall.
"We are all therefore delighted with the grants awarded. These, together with generous support from individuals and local business, and our own continuing fundraising efforts, will enable us to move forward with building the new hall and ensure the village retains a community focal point for future generations to enjoy.
"We are very fortunate in having a beautiful, unique landscape setting within our own playing field. Moreton residents are looking forward to extending a warm welcome to neighbouring villagers so they can benefit from this new facility in our rural area."
Building work is planned to commence in March 2014 with completion in October 2014 when the new hall will be available for private hire and for village activities.
Leader of Purbeck District Council, Councillor Gary Suttle, said: "The District Council recognises the value that modern village halls bring to community life, so it is with great pleasure that we can award £50,000 towards the Moreton village hall project."
The old hall will be open until the new hall is operational and has Keep Fit, a Toddlers group and a monthly Book and Coffee morning. Unfortunaetly it has been too cold in winter to continue Yoga, Pilates, Life Drawing and Children's Dance Classes. All of these will be restarting when the new hall is built, alonmg with a lunch club, youth club and much more.
