Auction At Birkin House
8:15am 25th November 2013
An auction will take place inside a former stately guest house near Dorchester with some usual items up for sale.
Duke's Auctioneers are holding an auction at Birkin House in Stinsford this Tuesday (26th November).
The owners are downsizing and have opened the building up to allow the general public to view the items on offer.
Included amongst Victorian beds and ornaments is a 48 foot late Victorian railway carriage which has been used as an 'unusual garden shed', according to the Auctioneers.
Matthew Denney from Duke's told us: "It's not something we do terribly often, the owners don't want to take too much with them and it's a big house, they're moving into a smaller house. So, on this occasion, and because it's nice to do here in Dorchester, we're going to do it on the premises- which is always lot of fun and we get a lot of people coming round to look on the view days."
He continued to tell us a little more about the railway carriage and how it may have found its way onto the premises: "They were popular after the War. People bought them, sometimes to live in, sometimes for added accommodation in the garden, sometimes as sheds, all sorts of things. Someone will be able to buy it and possibly restore it, it's a great thing."
