A South West MEP candidate says people in Dorset should care more about the European Parliament.
Over 70% of people in West Dorset voted in the last general election but only a third voted in the EU elections.
Conservative MEP candidate Melissa Maynard has told Wessex FM many important local issues are dealt with in Brussels,
"Certainly for rural communities, European policy is really quite important. Our agricultural policy is dependant in quite a large part on subsidies that come from Brussels so we need to make sure we get a really good deal for farmers."
She continues to say how the media has played on the characters of British government and not put EU Parliament in the spotlight enough.
"We don't know enough of the characters, everybody knows who Ed Milliband is, everybody knows who David Cameron is, and everybody can relate to the topics and issues they're talking about. There are not many people who know who the president of the European Commission is and can relate and it feels very remote."
