A Bosnian town that had over 8,000 of its residents massacred is working more closely with a young council in Bridport to build a brighter future.
Srebrenica became a victim and symbol of the Bosnian War in 1995 when the Srebrenica massacre occurred, with mostly Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) men and boys killed by units of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladic.
The town's located in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the mountains and also suffered a great deal of damage during the war.
A community group from Bridport have been working with Srebrenica to organise exchange events and fundraisers to help rebuild the town. Bridport's Tina Ellen Lee who is director of Opera Circus, has spent the past four years gaining the trust of some of the young people in Srebrenica and forging relationships between them and Bridport's young people.
David Powell is also very involved with the project, particularly from an educational angle, and he spoke to Wessex FM about Tina who got the project rolling, "Tina has worked with young people in Srebrenica who are very keen to take their city forward and not look back. She arranged a project where Bridport young people went out to Srebrenica and young people from Srebrenica came back to Bridport."
David continued to explain why he thought the involvement of young people was so important, " I think that Bridport young people have got a good understanding of the rights that they have and the responsibilities that they have as well, and I think that the young people of the town can work with the young people of Srebrenica to support them in gaining a greater understanding of those rights as well."
There's a fundraising concert this Wednesday evening (27th of November) at 7pm in Bridport Town Hall, tickets can be bought on the door, with local singers and groups involved. It's an Evening of Celebration and Song.
