Portland To Plan For The Future
4:15pm 2nd December 2013
If you live on Portland you could soon have more say over where new homes are built and where new shops go.
The Island's been given the go ahead to have its own neighbourhood plan.
The town council will now knock up a draft version - and residents will get to have their say on what they've come up with.
If approved by the inspector a local referendum will be held. It will then be adopted as local planning policy if it has the support of at least 51 per cent of Portland residents who voted.
Cllr Ian Roebuck, brief holder for Environment and Sustainability at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said: "A neighbourhood plan allows residents to have more influence over planning decisions in their area.
"I encourage residents to get involved and have their say on the draft plan once it has been formulated."
Those interested in getting involved in the development of their Neighbourhood Plan should contact Ian Looker, Clerk to Portland Town Council, on 01305 821638.
