Weymouth Sports Facilities Could be Run by Local Community
8:20am 16th January 2014
Councilors have voted to launch a public consultation on cost cutting proposals that COULD see sports facilities being run by the community in Weymouth.
The Draft Sports Facility Strategy was discussed at Management Committee in last week (7th Jan).
Community groups would potentially take over running and maintence costs.
Weymouth and Portland Borough Cllr Andy Blackwood says they're not going to let just any groups run facilities.
"They oviously have to do their sums and say yes we think we can do that.
"They can raise their own funds, so for example with those playing fields in Portland, they will be able to rent out the fields to other clubs and organisations."
Cllr Blackwood continues by expressing he is most concerned about the pool: "For me the really really big one is the future of the swimming pool. We have an agreement at the moment with SLM who run the Weymouth pool it runs out in a couple years time.
"It's aging building, it's something, we as a borough, really have to be thinking ahead now and saying what is the future of swimming provision in the borough?"
A revised strategy is expected to be put forward in May.
