A meeting of Portland Town Councillors tonight (Monday 20th January) is a routine budget setting meeting that Council members say is not open to the public.
Campaigners told Wessex FM they were concerned proposals to hike the Council Tax Precept were to be discussed behind closed doors.
It's after Town Councillors put forward controversial proposals to raise the fee from around £14.50 per year to £150 - a 1000% increase.
Town Councillor Tim Munro told us tonight's meeting was not a "secret gathering" and that the rise was a done deal. A decision they - Town Councillors - took as they fear their budget being capped by central government so have taken steps to protect services whilst they can.
A public meeting is being held for the public to attend next week at All Saints next (Monday 27th) at 7pm.
