Bus Strike Has 'Minimal' Effect
2:25pm 20th January 2014
It's been mainly business as usual 'on the buses' today, despite a strike by around 60 members of Unite based in Weymouth.
The drivers claim First Bus pay their drivers less than drivers based at other depots in the South West.
Services went ahead largely as normal with managers, supervisors and others drafted in to take the wheel, but Service X53, the Coastliner route to Exeter didn't run.
The company say businesses in different towns are entitled to pay what they can afford and not necessarily the same all across the country.
First MD for Hampshire, Dorset, and Berkshire, Marc Reddy, says staff were offered a pay rise of 1.5% with no strings attached. He claims most accepted the offer and only 38% of drivers there refused it and voted for strike action.
He's calling for a resolution to the dispute and says he's prepared to meet union officials again.
