Weldmar Celebrates 20 Years
7:53am 21st January 2014
One of Dorset's most loved charities is celebrating a milestone.
Weldmar Hospice Care Trust is 20 years old this week.
The charity looks after around 900 patients offering a range of palliative care services right across Dorset.
Director of Nursing and Patients Services at Weldmar Ruth Burnhill told us they have 2 reasons to celebrate;
"We're very proud of what we've done so far. We're actually celebrating 30 years of the community service and 20 years of the hospice, so it's a 50 year celebration really."
Ruth paid tribute to the staff past and present;
"It's a very rewarding job. I work with a lot of motivated people who enjoy caring for people who are often at the end stage of their life. It's not depressing, some people may think that, we can do a lot to help people and it's very satisfying."
"Right through the years we've always had great motivated staff and a very strong nursing team. But it's not just nurses and doctors; we have physiotherapists, occupation therapists, a Chaplin, complimentary therapy, counsellors, loads of volunteers and many more so it's a multi skilled team here."
Pauline Wotton's husband was diagnosed with liver cancer 3 years ago and spent the last days of his life at the Hospice;
"As a family we were shown great love and compassion. We were allowed to do the things that we wished for my husband. We had time to cry to talk and laugh ... My husband was a great man for laughter.
A service to mark the special occasion has been held at St Mary's Church for Weldmar staff and local dignitaries including the Bishop.
