Computer Scammers Target Dorset
8:13am 21st January 2014
People in Dorset are being targeted with a telephone scam that involves con men posing as computer technicians.
Recent figures from the National Fraud Authority show that the total loss to individuals from fraud and other scams is more than 6 billion pounds a year.
Cara from Dorchester told us a rather unfriendly woman phoned her out of the blue;
"It's not a computerised message it was actually a person to person call. She wanted me to turn my computer on basically because there was a fault with it, she said it came through the satellite system. I've had this kind of call before and they have no idea who they're talking too."
Cara worries that people who genuinely have a computer problem could fall victim to the scam;
"People who can believe what other people say on the telephone, if they get worried about some kind of problem that they have with their computer, OR they're not actually up to date with their software, they could be easily led to believe these people - con men - can help them."
Dorset police told Wessex FM internet and telephone scams are so common and widespread nowadays, a special helpline Action Fraud has been set up to deal with peoples complaints and reports.
