Packed Public Meeting On Portland Over Council Tax Rises
7:19am 28th January 2014
More than 400 people packed into a public meeting on Portland last night to challenge the town council over their plans to put up their share of council tax on the Island.
There was standing room only and heated exchanges from both sides at All Saints Church in Easton as town councillors attempted to explain their reasons for proposing the 1000 per cent increase.
That would see a Band D property go from paying £14 to £150 a year.
Councillors say they need the funds to pay for services on the Island which are no longer done by the Borough council due to cut backs.
They'll meet again on the 5th February to consider the proposal.
