Flag Day to Mark Commonwealth
7:20am 19th February 2014
Two Dorset councils will be raising flags to mark Commonwealth Day next month.
Weymouth and Portland and West Dorset District Council will join 500 local authorities and community groups to mark the occasion at 10am on the 10th March.
The new event is aimed at getting local communities to show the commitments to the Commonwealth, the values it stands for and the opportunities it offers its citizens around the world.
The borough council's flag raising ceremony will take place at the North Quay offices flag pole hosted by The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Cllr Ray Banham.
The district council's flag raising ceremony will take place at the front of South Walks House hosted by West Dorset District Council Chairman Cllr Gillian Summers.
Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Cllr Ray Banham said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to join the British Isles and Channel Islands in hosting a public flag raising event to recognise Commonwealth Day."
District council chairman Cllr Gillian Summers said: "This is a great opportunity for West Dorset District Council to raise a flag for the first Commonwealth Day at our new building, South Walks House, on Commonwealth Day."
