Decision Time Over £2M Charles Street Hand Out
7:44am 25th February 2014
Town centre developers in Dorchester will find out today whether they're to get a £2M helping hand from the District Council.
Simons are asking West Dorset Councillors to underwrite the Charles Street scheme.
The full council has been recommended to back the move by the Executive Committee.
Speaking to Wessex FM, Leader of West Dorset District Council, Robert Gould said:
"We have stuck with this scheme for many years now and we are closer than ever to bringing it to fruition. We've got Marks & Spencer and Waitrose both signed up as key stores to this development. And the developers are keen to move forward but obviously there's this viability gap which needs to be addressed."
But District Councillor Alistair Chisholm can't understand why the council should have to dig deeper into its pockets when other private developers have managed on their own.
"Poundbury, Ok it has the Duchy behind it but that hasn't seen any public money. Brewery Square that hasn't seen any public funds. Why should the public purse be leaking away for the Charles Street site?"
