Works started to provide two safe crossing points on a busy Weymouth Road.
Two pedestrian islands are being built on Preston Road, traffic speeds are also being reduced.
The improvements are being funded through the Weymouth Relief Road scheme and will cost £15,000.
Other improvements that have already been carried out as part of this scheme include the mini roundabout at Overcombe corner and surfacing of a footpath linking Elm Close play area with Overcombe car park.
Cllr David Mannings, Dorset County Councillor for Lodmoor, said:
"I am very pleased that two islands are to be erected on Preston Road, especially as it will provide a safe crossing for persons to get to the bus lay-by at Squires Knapp."
