HMS Iron Duke Leaves Portland Today
8:02am 23rd March 2014
A Royal Navy Battleship, weighing nearly 5,000 tonnes, leaves Portland today (Sunday 23rd March) after a weekend of diplomacy training on the island.
HMS Iron Duke has been hosting special guests and school children on a high profile training exercise, practising their capabilities of hosting visitors on the ship while they're on defence duties abroad.
The multi-functional frigate will soon head out to the South Atlantic to patrol pirate shipping lanes.
Commander Tom Tredray told us the West coast of Africa has become a danger hotspot;
"It's more based around theft and taking oil rather than capturing people for ransom, but it's still a significant problem that's on the up at the moment. So the more we can work to build the capacity with local navy's the sooner this problem will be brought under control."
