Portland Port Is Cruising Ahead
7:44am 2nd May 2014
German and American cruise liners will be docking in Portland Port today. (Friday 2 May)
It's the start of the new cruise season, and both boats will bring around 2,000 passengers with them, which is estimated to be worth around £90,000 to the local economy.
Portland Port is going from strength to strength in the cruise market.
Manager Ian McQuade says he visits the cruise lines in Europe and the US twice a year.
"They now all understand the benefits of Portland. The fact that we have deep water. The fact that we are in close proximity to the English Channel shipping lanes, and we can give them access to some stunning English countryside as well as local attractions."
Early indications show that Portland Port is set to break last year's record of cruise passengers visiting Weymouth and Portland.
Its expected 24,000 passengers will be arriving in the Borough.
