A Dorset MEP's been in Weymouth to find out more about the problems that could arise from Condor wanting to buy a larger ferry for its routes to Jersey and Guernsey.
Ashley Fox visited Mace News in Lennox Street in the Park District to sign the “Keep Condor in Weymouth” petition.
Its emerged a new vessel won’t be able to fit into the current berth, despite the borough council have only recently paid out nearly £4M to fix it.
Mr Fox explained that under European regulations it would be unlikely that there would be any EU grants available.
But he pledged to do all he could to support Weymouth as a successful ferry port and to provide the links that everyone in the Channel Islands and Weymouth would like.
Cllr Ian Bruce said the Council are working closely with Condor with an emphasis on improving the reliability of the service to the Channel Islands and, “we are leaving no stone unturned to find a long-term solution.”
Roger Costello, the proprietor of the Brierley Guest House emphasised just how important our links to the Channel Islands were for the economy of Weymouth & Portland.
