Sir Ben Ainslie has told Wessex FM plans to field a British team for the America's Cup, are progressing.

The Olympic sailor propelled Oracle Team USA to victory over New Zealand in a thrilling race series in San Francisco last year.

Sir Ben's success sparked interest in creating a British squad to compete in the prestigious sailing event.

It's understood he's eyeing up a spot in Portsmouth to form his team's headquarters, near to his new offices in Southampton.

Speaking to us in Weymouth, Ben says his aim is to bring the Cup back to Britain where it was first contested in 1851;

"We've been working very hard for 10 or 12 months now since the last America's Cup and we're in a very strong position. We haven't launched a team yet but we hope to do that in the very near future. The background work we've been doing has put us in a good position."

"The goal is to win it and bring the cup back to British waters. It's a huge challenge but we have a good team together so far. We've got more information on all that to come, which we'll announce at the appropriate time."

Details of the date of the next America's Cup and where it will take place will be revealed later in the year.
