Harvesting Starts On Dorset Garlic Farm
9:15am 19th May 2014
Looks like it could be a Summer of stinking success for Dorset's Garlic!
Harvesting starts this week at Dorset's only garlic farm, The South West Garlic Farm near Bridport, which has nearly a million bulbs on site. (19th May)
The harvest will take nearly nine weeks, 7am-9pm, and will be carried out the majority of the time by farm owner, Mark Botwright and his son. Mark admitted his wife and daughter would help at weekends and that they may hire one other person this year to help!
Wessex FM spoke to Mark who couldn't believe how much the business had grown admitting he was proud to supply many amazing establishments, including The Ritz in London and Mark Hix's restaurants.
Mark added that this year's bad weather has actually seemed to improve their crops, "Three weeks of cold weather during the winter, that really helps set the bulb, and then sunshine like we're having now. I mean we got absolutely battered with wind and rain during the winter but it seems to have actually made the plants stronger and it's looks the strongest healthiest crop we've had for many years."
Mark also confirmed the Second ever World Garlic Eating competition will return to Dorset this September.
