There's been a huge "spike" in the number of people playing volleyball on Weymouth beach.

25% more people have been playing the sport in the town since the free to use public nets were put back in the sand 7 weeks ago.

Weymouth Beach Volleyball club say more people than ever are now diving around in the sand in Weymouth and Director Peter Bennett told us why he thinks they're seeing a new boom in the game;

"I think part of it is due to the Olympic Games. We saw increases last year but more and more people are learning about beach volleyball. It doesn't matter if you're completely new to the game or played many years ago, you can come down to the beach and join in the fun."

Peter said they recently they had a record breaking night on the sand around 70 people getting involved - the most he's seen in 3 or 4 years.

But is it just a bunch of burley men with their shirts off playing the game?

"Not at all! We have School teams from IPACA and Wey Valley and the Wey Valley team are completely made up of girls and they like playing the IPACA boys and at the moment it's 1 all in matches, the girls beat the boys in the first week and then the boys got revenge.

It doesn't matter whether you're male or female come on down, there's lots of people of your ability who're playing beach volleyball.

We like a little bit of rivalry between the sexes!"

If you and your friends or colleagues fancy getting involved in the Spike Local Volleyball League head down to the Pavilion end of Weymouth beach and sign your team up for 4 a side matches, register at 6pm ready to hit the sand at 6:30pm.

The popular Battens and RAF Charity Beach Volleyball night is just around the corner too on July 31st, for teams with 6 to 10 players.

Organisers of the high profile event told us earlier this year they were trying to lure some Olympians to the event ... Watch this space.
