Rain Fails To Dampen Chamber's Summer Celebration
8:28am 3rd June 2014
The heavens opened as representatives from firms and other organisations across Weymouth and Portland came together to celebrate summer at Pennsylvania Castle on 22 May. With a planned barbecue being swiftly swapped for a summer grill, the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce would not let the weather spoil their plans for an evening of fun and entertainment.
More than 50 guests gathered at one of Portland’s most impressive venues for the Summer Soirée, a new take on the Chamber’s annual President’s Dinner. It was hosted this year by Julie Cleaver of Popcorn Marketing, Chamber President for 2014-15.
Warm and dry indoors, the guests were treated to a wonderful meal along with entertainment from local quartet The Decadettes and Darron Garnett, the Voice of Cool Swing, who provided favourite tunes from the 50s and 60s.
The evening also strengthened links between South Dorset and the Channel Islands, one of the guests being David Thompson, Council Member and Director of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber President Julie Cleaver said: “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at one of Portland’s premier businesses, Pennsylvania Castle. The renovation of this beautiful building has been completed with loving attention to detail and the surroundings make it a picturesque venue, whatever the weather. I encourage anyone to consider The Penn for their next celebration, wedding or special event.”
Julie added: “It is important that the Chamber continues to support businesses both in Weymouth and Portland. I’m already looking forward to our next special event for local firms, a speed networking breakfast at Seaview Holiday Park in Preston on 19 June.”
The event also raised £225, through a chocolate raffle, for the President’s charity, About Face, the head and neck cancer support charity based in Poole.
