Church Lectern Damaged By Vandals

Dorchester Town Centre

12:17pm 18th June 2014
(Updated 12:45pm 18th June 2014)

A church in Dorchester has been the victim of a callous attack by vandals.

The finely carved wooden lectern which is in the shape of an eagle at St Peter's has been damaged.

Police think someone has used a knife or a saw on it.

Inspector Steve Marsh told Wessex FM:

"Unfortunately the offence could have happened over a number of days but we would be keen to hear from anybody who may have seen anything suspicious."

Vicar, The Revd Vicky Thurtell said; 'this pointless act of vandalism does not deter us from keeping this ancient and holy place  - the Anglican Church in the the County Town centre - available for the whole community and all who visit from home and abroad (thousands per year) for its heritage and as a place of worship and prayer. The Churchwardens are working with the police on this matter and we will be looking to step up security procedures.'
