New Treatment For Prostate Cancer Patients

A state of the art alternative to surgery for prostate cancer patients is now possible at the Dorset County hospital.
It's become the county centre for HIFU-High Intensity Focused Ultrasound.
It uses heat generated by ultrasound energy to destroy the area of prostate with cancer.
The treatment has been introduced at DCH by lead consultant urological surgeon Mr Naveed Afzal.
He says 'HIFU is a minimally invasive procedure and can be done as a day case. It is a particularly good alternative to surgery for patients who have had radiotherapy which hasn't been successful. HIFU has a very high success rate - not as high as surgery but patients are not at such high risk of some of the possible side effects of surgery such as impotence and incontinence. I am really pleased that we can offer our patients this excellent alternative to surgery.'
