Volunteer Crisis In Family Support
7:16am 31st July 2014
A Dorset family support charity do not have enough volunteers to cope with an increase in referrals.
Home Start West Dorset offer support to families in West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland who have at least one child under five.
Home Start do not have enough volunteers available to match with new families referred to them.
From 1st July 2013 to 30th June 2014, the charity have supported 77 families but they have had to decline support to 33 families in the same time period.
Home Start need more volunteers for weekly home visits to support young children and their families who live in West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland and have one at least child under five.
Spokesperson for the charity, Gemma Vasey told Wessex FM what volunteers can expect;
''It depends on the families needs, the weekly visits can be anything from a volunteer going in and doing activities with the children, it can be helping mum or dad get out and about to access local facilities, making new friends at a toddler group, it's very very varied.''
To be a volunteer you need to be a parent or have parenting experience, attend the charity's Volunteer Preparation Course and be willing to spare 2-3 hours a week to support a family in need.
Gemma added that their volunteers get a lot out of helping families;
''They all get alot of experience that they can pass on, lots of different skills and knowledge and they can give something back to their local community.''
The charity's Volunteer Preparation Course is the route to becoming a home-visiting volunteer and will provide you with all the knowledge you need for the role.
The next course will begin on 30th September at Home Start's office in Poundbury. To sign up to attend, you can call 01305 265072 or email email@example.com.
