Superfit gymgoers were on the ball as they claimed victory in the Batten's charity beach volleyball tournament in Weymouth.

Team New Body beat Team Stratton 20 points to 11 to lift the trophy after a sizzling evening of volleyball in the seventh annual extravaganza organised by Battens Solicitors.

Some 32 teams from a variety of companies and organisations battled it out on the sands with proceeds in aid of the Dorset Kidney Fund.

The popular tournament was held as the curtain raiser to the annual RAF Careers Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic.

Cherise Luke-Bennett, one of the solicitors organising the competition in Battens' Weymouth office, said: "Once again it was a superb evening. "Congratulations to Team New Body, who were worthy winners, and thanks to everyone who joined in to make it such a success.

"The weather was perfect and there was a great turnout from supporters. We hope to have beaten last year's fundraising total of over £1,000, with proceeds this year for the Dorset Kidney Fund." Cherise added: "Many thanks also go to the RAF, Weymouth Volleyball Club, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and everyone else who provided support."

Teams played in groups on beach courts before the grand final on the centre court.

Talented singers the Decadettes provided entertainment in the interval, and there was a hog roast from Piggin' Perfect and a bar from Aura.

Paul Bithell, vice-chairman of the Dorset Kidney Fund, said: "It was a fantastic evening and our most appreciative thanksgo to Battens as the proceeds will go a long way to help renal patients." Team New Body from the New Body Fitness Centre on the Granby Industrial Estate triumphed over Agincare Demons to reach the final while Team Stratton beat Dorset Echo's Echo Beach. The Runners-Up Final was won by Albert Goodman accountants Weymouth team when they edged out Mustoe Shorter 14-13.

The televised RAF Careers Volleyball Classic, which has Battens among its sponsors, will feature the top 100 men and women's teams from home and abroad over the weekend of August 2 and 3.
