WW1 Study Day in Bridport

Bridport Town Hall

8:33am 2nd August 2014

A  World War One Study Day  takes place in Bridport Town Hall today ( Saturday 2nd August) as a 'curtain raiser' for a free exhibition called 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' there later this month (August 9th-25th).

Bridport Town Hall's been transformed into a World War One Trench to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, and will include a recruitment office and a traditional 1914 living room to show what Bridport was like 100 years ago.

There will also be talks from Professor Graham Davis, formerly of Bath University, Chris Copson, Curator of the Keep Museum in Dorchester and others.

Wessex FM spoke to Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard from the Bridport Heritage Forum who says Bridport had a key involvement in WW1.

"Many of the men were in restricted industries, but they still volunteered to go and fight. We've also realised that the ladies were involved with making camouflage netting and also then submarine netting which was a special contract, a secret contract, that was introduced at the beginning of 1915."

Jane says that due to Bridport's rich rope and net making heritage the town didn't suffer economically during the war, "As soon as war breaks out Bridport always does very well, so the four years of the War saw Bridport booming."
