Coastguard Issues Warning To Budding Sailors
8:06am 2nd September 2014
Portland Coastguard are advising boat owners to keep their vessels sea-worthy and to receive the necessary training before they take to the sea.
It follows a very busy weekend when the coastguard were inundated with calls.
John Norman a Coast Watch Assistant based at Portland Coastguard told Wessex FM; "Boat owners need to maintain their vessels and make sure they are sea worthy. They should also check they have in-date flares, your VHF radio is working and that you keep your life jackets regularly serviced. "
The coastguard also say the sea can be an unpredictable place so it is worth getting training on chart skills.
They say budding sailors need to be aware that some areas around the Dorset coast can be very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.
