Concern Over Loss Of Parking In Dorchester
1:04pm 9th September 2014
There's concern over a loss of parking in Dorchester, when the second phase of the Charles Street development goes ahead, should a planning application be approved.
Town councillors have now given their backing to the scheme, but it's West Dorset District Council who will have the final say.
Susie Hosford is chairman of the town council's Planning and Environment Committee.
She thinks alternative parking must be considered;
"The build period is two and a half years and we will lose all the parking in Charles Street, while that's taking place. So it's essential that WDDC put a robust plan in place with alternative parking provision while the build is going on."
The scheme no longer includes a hotel - but does include space for 67 flats.
Councillor Hosford wants District planners to stay strong when it comes to affordable housing;
"Whilst we welcome the thought of having more people living in the town centre and the vibrancy that would bring, we would like WDDC to stick to the local plan and require a third of that housing to be affordable."
