The launch event of AsOne Theatre company’s latest production PASSION , was held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester.
The locally based theatre company’s research into the affect of World War One and recent conflicts on the family included over 20 hours of aural history recordings, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. These were presented to Maria Gayton – Community Engagement Officer by AsOne’s Artistic Director Jane McKell.
The 50 invited guests including Friends of AsOne, representatives from Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery, West Dorset District Council, Dorchester Town Council , Weymouth & Portland Borough Council and main sponsors Brewery Square development enjoyed wine, and canapés provided by Gallery on the Square – before being introduced to Project PASSION’s Artistic Team.
The evening’s finale was a rehearsed reading of selected excerpts from the new play as a preview to the 20 date tour which opens at the Corn Exchange Dorchester on Wednesday 8 October with the final performance at the Pavilion Weymouth on Friday 21 November.
Jane McKell told the guests:- “ It has been a tremendous privilege to be involved with all of the families from the Wessex area who provided their stories & memories for PASSION. It is important that their interviews are left as a legacy for future generations to hear. The families are keen for remembrance and discussion. It is exciting to see how this has been developed by our creative team into a stirring and thought provoking piece of theatre.”
Councillor Mollie Rennie, who has children in the armed forces, said she found the excerpts from PASSION touched her. She went on to say – ‘If this is the affect of the excerpts - think what will the full play achieve!’.
An historic period Paige vehicle was displayed outside of the DHC as quests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester were welcomed at the reception.
