End Of An Era For Portland Coastguards
6:01am 15th September 2014
It's a sad day for Portland Coastguard.
The station officially hands over to the new National Maritime Operations Centre in Fareham today.
This weekend a flotilla of boats crossed Weymouth Harbour to pay tribute to the work and dedication of staff over the years.
Mark Rodaway has moved from Portland Coastguard to take up a new role at the centre, but not everyone was able to follow him;
Mark told Wessex FM;
"I will be desperately sorry not to see all of them transferred to the new National Maritime Operations Centre. I understand the reasons why with family and moving, but they can be very proud of the job they have done looking after the public and the mariner on the sea and around the coastline of Dorset."
Local sea users and South Dorset MP Richard Drax have raised concerns about whether rescue missions will be hampered by the new location.
Mark says that's not the case;
"You should see no noticeable change in our service delivery. If anything we should be in a position where we can not only deliver quality search and rescue but also safety messages like the Maritime Broadcast."
