Concerns from the PDSA about a sharp rise in cases of lungworm amongst dogs are being played down by a Dorset vet.
Rick Vanhoutteghem from Southfield Vets in Dorchester says its difficult to diagnose, but owners here are more responsible than in some parts of the country and quick to call for help if their animals are unwell.
He says we can help minimise the chance of our dogs picking up what can be a fatal disease by preventing them picking up slugs and snails, also by washing out food and water bowls.
Rik told Wessex FM they have to eliminate other diseases first before they can justify sending off blood samples to a lab to prove or dispell the presence of lungworm.
Classic symptoms are sickness and lethargy, continuing after other treatments for illness have been given.
