Police Get Tough On Beggars In Dorchester

Police in Dorchester say they are having to deal with a growing problem of people begging in the town centre.
They're receiving an increasing number of complaints from local shops and businesses saying it's damaging their trade.
Inspector Steve Marsh told Wessex FM before they would have asked them to move on;
"This doesn't seem to be working as a tactic so what we are doing now is perusing them by other means. So recently we actually reported two offenders to appear at court where if found guilty they will be fined for begging which is an offence."
Inspector Marsh says it's a difficult ethical dilemma, but he's making this appeal;
"Many of these people are concerned with alcohol and drugs misuse. So giving them money doesn't help with the problem.
We and many of our partners often help with trying to deal with their alcohol and drugs problems, so I would ask, please don't give them money."
