Beach Clean Up Weekend
7:36am 20th September 2014
It's the Great British Beach Clean weekend with seven beaches in South and West Dorset getting a spruce up.
The Marine Conservation Society are behind the initiatives and they're hoping volunteers can give them some time at the various locations.
Among the items picked up in previous clean ups are plastic bottles, carrier bags, condoms, nappies, balloons and tiny plastic pieces.
Last year the MCS' annual litter clean found an average of 2,309 pieces of litter for every kilometre of coast, the most since their surveys began in 2004.
In our area, three of the clean up events are taking place today (Saturday), at Seatown, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Shore (Portland), while tomorrow they're at West Bay's West Beach, Chesil Cove and Newtons Cove (Weymouth) and Warbarrow, near Wareham.
