Go The Extra Mile For Walk To School Month
12:01pm 8th October 2014
Dorset parents are being encouraged to give up the school run for the school walk instead.
The call comes as part of International Walk to School Month and NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group says around 60% of children in the county travel to school by car.
They claim it's causing parking problems and a build-up of pollution at school gates.
Director of Public Health Dorset Dr David Phillips told Wessex FM; "Walking is a great way for children to keep physically active, importantly physical activity can help children feel happier and also improves their concentration at school."
People living in more rural areas could find that it's too far to walk so they're being asked to try the "park and ride" approach where you park further away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
To find out if there are any school walking schemes set up in near you, contact your local council or your school.
