Dorset Votes To Merge Its Fire Service With Wiltshire

Dorchester Fire Station Demo

12:27pm 29th October 2014

Dorset residents want their fire and rescue service merged with Wiltshire's.

That's the outcome of the public consultation just completed in this county, and published on Dorset Fire and Rescue's website.

Respondents were given three options for the future of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service:

1.  Dorset Fire Authority to stay independent and increase collaboration with Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole.

2.  Dorset Fire Authority to stay independent and increase collaboration with Wiltshire & Swindon Fire Authority while also collaborating with Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole.

3.  Dorset Fire Authority to merge with Wiltshire & Swindon Fire Authority to create a single Combined Fire Authority while also collaborating with Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council, the Borough of Poole, Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council.

Papers are available to download from both fire services' websites.

The papers also give Fire Authority members a business case to consider which indicates that £4-6m could be saved, should the two fire authorities decide to combine.

Dorset Fire Authority meet on November 4th to discuss their next step, with Wiltshire's meeting a week later to review feedback and make a decision.
